The Redwood Forest- New Zealand Style

On any given day - at any given time - the Whakarewarewa Forest is a beehive of activity. Thankfully, this magnificent place is more commonly called "The Redwood Forest" -or just "The Forest." Over 170 tree species from all over the world were planted here in 1899. Technically, the Redwoods are descendants of the Coastal Californian Redwoods.

Literally minutes from downtown Rotorua, the Forest is a virtual mecca for mountain bicyclists, hikers (okay, "walkers"), and horseback riders. With 60 tracks/outback trails, the biggest decision is where to explore and at what level you want to exert yourself. My friends and I walk in the Forest every Friday morning, taking a trail with panoramic views that give me a free ticket to see the Pohutu Geyser blow its top.

Tom took Sarah and Paul to some of his favorite biking trails. He likely took them on some tracks this 56-year old guy has no business riding. Nonetheless, they had a great time and came back alive with stories and a few minor souvenir bruises.

Meanwhile, Becky and I - choosing to live to see another day - took a lovely, more leisurely track on foot.

  1. First- what the heck am I doing to that tree?! Second- could you please photoshop in a bike next to me? They look so much cooler zooming through the forest! Also, it would be nice to have a bike again... sigh...
