Barbara, Geoffrey, Tom, and I spent a terrific afternoon tramping in a scenic reserve about 75 minutes from Rotorua. Our goal: to get a good look at the North Island's highest waterfall, Wairere Falls. The track is all uphill from the car park, but we were well rewarded the entire way with mountain streams, lush foliage and a good workout. After a heavy rain, the falls are even more dramatic, but we were more than delighted with the late summer water levels. It wasn't enough to savor the view from the midway look-out. We continued to the top of the falls where we used big boulders as changing rooms and put on our swimsuits. The water was brisk, but the panoramic view of the valley below made this one of our better New Zealand soaks.
Fantastic photos! What a cool hike... good on you! :)
ReplyDeleteGlad you guys were able to do that hike - Paul and I sure enjoyed it! After seeing the photos of you "soaking," I wish we had done the same. It was a pretty sweaty hike and the soak would have been so refreshing!
