I've been promising to write our family cookbook since winning the Breckenfelder Easter Contest of 1987. Countless commitments and assorted distractions have become convenient excuses from keeping this promise - to the point where the cookbook is now a running joke.
After 23 years, this 6-month sabbatical in Rotorua has forced the issue. In December, I carried a 3-inch stack of family favorites with me on Air New Zealand, and I've been inputting recipes ever since. The stack now measures 3/8 of an inch.
A timely cookbook inspiration came my way last week. The Rotorua Museum sponsored a free lecture by Alexa Johnston, a well-known curator and cookbook author from Auckland. Alexa is particularly interested in researching "community" cookbooks, like church cookbooks (and family cookbooks). She says they're the best because people put their best recipes in them. Of course I had to buy her award-winning cookbook, "Ladies, A Plate."
I'm eagerly awaiting our family cookbook, Mom! It is neat that you heard Alexa Johnston speak - sounds like quite the inspiration! :) Miss you.
