Same Country, Different World

We’ve been in New Zealand nearly 5 months, and I’d like a nickel for every sheep I’ve spotted, for every dead possum I’ve seen on the roads, and for every time someone has asked, “Have you been to the South Island?” As soon as anyone mentions the South Island they quickly add, “It’s spectacular – so different from the North Island!” And after our 10-day road trip, I wholeheartedly agree.

New Zealand is a relatively small country, but the diversity of its land is staggering. We flew from Rotorua to Christchurch, leaving behind the volcanic-created, geothermal ridden lands we've enjoyed since December. A 2-hour flight took us to New Zealand’s 2nd largest city where we quickly rented a campervan and launched our exploration of glaciated peaks and stunning coastlines. We discovered the culture of Holiday Parks and became increasingly enamored with parks that offered power, showers and a spot for us close to the toilets. I learned that I would also like a nickel for every campervan we saw on the South Island.
